After having worked with Miguel B. Araújo in a European overview about the utility of wild areas, I remembered to merge some of the general information in a didactic text (in portuguese) in Naturae Digital.

In summary, the post:

  • defines and locates wild areas globally;

  • highlights their value in respect to biodiversity and functionality of planetary processes (hydrology, meteorology and climatology);

  • criticizes the absence of wild areas within the major biodiversity and climatic agendas (until now),

  • presents an oportunity window for the recognition of wild areas in the future political agendas that are now being designed; and

  • explains the importance of particular phylosophies in nature restoration, which aim to reach self-maintainance of such systems under distinct assumptions and management principles- rewilding.
